Landscape Design

Your landscape design is like a floor plan for an outdoor area and should be practical, and reflect your needs, likes and interests.

To figure out what you want to get out of your design you will then need to consider:

The function of your garden : This is a crucial aspect of landscape design as it details what the purpose of the garden will be for. Depending on your requirements the function of the garden could be one or a mix of the below:

  • Entertainment – with plenty of covered areas, seating and relaxing areas that can accommodate large crowds.
  • Child Friendly. – A safe garden with plenty of lawn and open space that the kids can run around in
  • Pet Friendly. Materials and plants that can withstand the wear and tear of dogs.
  • Structured ornamental garden. A design based purely on looks and beauty.

The theme of your garden : This is where your inspiration comes from. This could be influenced by a type of plant, culture or environment that you prefer or would like to replicate and could include:

  • A relaxed, informal country garden
  • Balinese style resort garden
  • Rustic Australian native garden
  • Simple and low maintenance garden
  • Colour themed gardens
  • Succulents & Cacti garden

The Design Features in your garden : You will need to decide if there are any design features that you would like to incorporate. These could include:

  • Hedges
  • Water features and ponds,
  • Structural backdrops or pavilions
  • Retaining Walls
  • And any additional items which are purely for beauty and do not serve a practical significance.

Budgeting : The more features you want, the more expensive it will be. So be realistic with your budget and don’t over extend yourself as you want to be able to enjoy your new garden design without the worry of how you will be able to ever afford it!

The use and function that you want out of your garden will dictate your design decisions.

When you have visualised what you are after you will need to start creating a design plan. Your first step to landscape design is to measure out your garden site and draw a plan of your current garden. This will need to be to scale showing the correct measurements and proportions of the garden, and indicating the areas of light, shade and elevation. The plan will need to include existing features such as buildings, poles, rocks etc that cannot be moved.

Once you have set up all the elements you can now start to add all of the new landscape design elements that you want. This could include, shrubbery, trees, walkways, paths, patios, sheds, pools, lawn area and irrigation.

Creating a landscape plan will also help you in your decision making processes such as in selecting plants and materials. The more information and detail that you can put into the plan the better you will be able to cost estimate and the more likely you will be to see your design become a reality.

And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on planning and designing your garden, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.

Plant Selection

Plants can make a huge statement in any garden. They are probably the most important single aspect in a new landscape or garden renovation. Plants can set the mood and style of the garden, draw you into different areas and create interesting views and features.

So it is important to have the right plant selection. To do this you should consider:

  • The Size of the Plant. Read up on how tall and wide the plants grow. Planting large plants in unsuitable places can be a costly experience.
  • The theme and style of your garden. If your looking to replicate a certain style such as Australian, Balinese, Country, Tropical etc then your plant choice should be a reflection of this.
  • The climate and location of the plants. Plants are suited to different environments, light conditions and soils. If the area is in full sun then you will need to choose a plant that can withstand direct sunlight.
  • How much maintenance is required. Some plants require more care, maintenance, watering, and general care than others. If you are not prepared to put in all the effort, choose plants that are drought tolerant and of a hardy nature.
  • Contrasting colours and textures of plants. Use your plants to give your garden a contrast of light and shade. Plants that have different thickness of leaves, colours or patterns can look great when layered into your garden creating different heights and bursts of colour.

So before you run to the nursery, do some research so that you choose plants that are suited to your area and will survive and thrive.

And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on planning and designing your garden, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are structures that hold or retain soil behind them. There are a wide range of options when choosing a retaining wall for your yard. The retaining wall can be discreet blending into the background, become a great feature of your garden or even provide added seating for your yard.

There are two types of retaining walls:

Gravity Wall. Gravity walls rely on their own strength and weight to hold the soil behind them and are of a shorter height.

Reinforced Walls. Reinforced Walls use layers of Geogrid (a manufactured high strength reinforced grid material) that provide additional stability to the structure to resist the pressure applied by the mass of soil behind it.

Retaining walls can be made from a wide variety of materials including, stones, brick, concrete blocks, treated timber, rocks and boulders. They type and construction of the retaining wall that you need will influence the material that you require. Stone or wood can erode or decompose over time so a hardier material such as concrete or masonry blocks are recommended as they are simple to stack and join together and are a maintenance free retaining wall option.

The retaining wall you build has to be suited to your environment, and the type and construction of it will be determined by its location, surroundings, the slope of the land, the type of soil, and the size and height of the planned retaining wall. So get as much advice as you can and you will be sure to choose a retaining wall that will be practical, look great and last for years & years.

Bed Planning

Great gardens don’t happen by accident—they begin with good planning. At Fox Mowing, we know that well-designed garden beds are the backbone of a healthy, attractive outdoor space. Whether you want vibrant flower beds, thriving veggie patches, or low-maintenance native displays, thoughtful garden bed planning makes all the difference.

We help Australian homeowners design and install garden beds that are not only visually pleasing, but also functional, sustainable, and suited to your local environment.

Why Plan Your Garden Beds?

Planning your garden beds properly means:

  • Better plant growth with fewer problems
  • More efficient use of water and fertiliser
  • Purpose-built zones (e.g. for colour, fragrance, privacy, edibles)
  • Greater support for pollinators and local wildlife
  • Easier maintenance and seasonal care

A garden bed should be more than just a patch of soil—it should serve your space and style long-term.

What’s Involved in Bed Planning?

1. Define Your Garden Goals

We start by asking:

  • What do you want your beds to achieve?
  • Are you growing for looks, food, privacy, or habitat?
  • Do you prefer formal borders or relaxed cottage style?

We tailor your garden beds to meet your aesthetic preferences, lifestyle, and level of garden care commitment.

2. Site Assessment

Every site is different. We consider:

  • Sunlight exposure (full sun, partial shade, etc.)
  • Drainage and irrigation needs
  • Wind and shelter factors
  • Existing structures like fences, decks, and slopes
  • Size and shape of available space

We’ll advise on the best locations and layout to maximise both function and beauty.

3. Plant Selection

Choosing the right plants is key to long-term success.

Purpose Recommended Plant Types
Flowering colourLavender, Salvia, Marigolds, Kangaroo Paw
Low maintenanceWestringia, Lomandra, Dianella, succulents
Edible gardensTomatoes, herbs, lettuces, bush tucker plants
Native habitatGrevillea, Callistemon, Correa, Banksia
Seasonal interestPerennials, annuals, bulbs, ornamental grasses

We match plant choices to your local climate, soil type, and garden style.

4. Soil Preparation

Healthy soil is the foundation of any successful bed.

We prepare your garden beds by:

  • Clearing debris and old roots
  • Improving drainage or water retention as needed
  • Adding compost, organic matter, or mulch
  • Building raised beds where suitable

Our team ensures your soil is primed to give your new plants the best possible start.

5. Edging and Structure

A well-planned bed needs strong edges to define space and keep everything tidy.

We offer:

  • Timber, stone, or metal edging
  • Brick borders
  • Raised sleeper beds
  • Rock or gravel features for contrast

The result is a neat, contained bed that complements your landscape and reduces maintenance.

Bed Planning for Every Garden Type

  • Front yards – Boost kerb appeal with colour and symmetry
  • Backyards – Create zones for relaxing, growing, and entertaining
  • Small spaces – Use vertical beds, pots, and tight borders smartly
  • Commercial or strata gardens – Simple, clean designs for shared or public spaces
  • Sustainable gardens – Drought-tolerant planting, native beds, and mulching systems

Drainage

Soggy patches, pooling water, and muddy lawns aren’t just unpleasant—they’re signs of poor drainage, and over time they can wreak havoc on your garden. At Fox Mowing, we understand the unique challenges of Australian soils, climates, and garden designs. That’s why we offer smart, tailored drainage solutions to help your lawn and garden stay healthy, dry, and usable all year round.

Whether you’re dealing with occasional flooding or chronic wet spots, we’ll help you solve the issue at the root.

Why Good Drainage Matters in Australian Gardens

Poor drainage leads to:

  • Root rot and plant decline
  • Increased mosquitoes and insects
  • Waterlogged lawns that won’t grow
  • Soil erosion and damage to garden beds or foundations
  • Mould, mildew, and slipping hazards

With Australia’s unpredictable weather—from droughts to downpours—effective drainage is essential for any lawn or landscape.

Common Signs of a Drainage Problem

If you notice any of the following, it may be time to call in a drainage expert:

  • Puddles that linger long after rain
  • Soggy soil or turf that squelches underfoot
  • Yellowing or stunted lawn patches
  • Overflowing garden beds or flooded pathways
  • Water running toward your home or shed
  • Cracks or sinking in the ground

Our Drainage Solutions at Fox Mowing

We offer practical, site-specific drainage services to resolve issues and prevent future damage. Here’s how we can help:

On-Site Drainage Assessment

We assess slope, soil type, lawn grade, and water flow patterns to identify the source of the problem—not just the symptoms.

Drainage System Installation

Depending on your garden’s needs, we may install:

  • French drains – gravel-filled trenches that redirect water
  • Aggie pipes (agricultural pipes) – perforated pipe systems that help disperse water underground
  • Surface drains or pits – collect runoff from hard surfaces and redirect it safely
  • Soak wells – collect excess water and allow it to gradually soak into the surrounding soil
  • Swales or shallow channels – move water naturally across sloped areas

Soil Improvement

Sometimes drainage issues stem from compacted or clay-heavy soil. We may recommend:

  • Aeration
  • Organic soil conditioning
  • Raised garden beds
  • Turf underlay with improved drainage capacity

Gutter and Downpipe Redirection

We can help prevent roof runoff from flooding garden areas by redirecting water flow with smart extensions or splash guards.

Customised for Your Climate and Landscape

Fox Mowing teams work across NSW, QLD, ACT, and other regions, so we understand how local rainfall, terrain, and soil types affect drainage.

Whether you’re on coastal sand, urban clay, or inland slopes, we’ll find a solution that fits your land and lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can I fix drainage issues myself?

For minor issues, adjusting your garden grade or soil might help. But persistent or large-scale problems often require proper assessment and installed drainage systems.

2. Will installing drainage damage my lawn?

We always aim to minimise disruption, and we’ll restore affected turf or beds once the work is complete. The long-term benefit to your garden far outweighs any short-term disturbance.

3. How long does it take to fix drainage problems?

Most systems can be installed in 1–3 days, depending on the size of the project.

4. Do you provide drainage for veggie patches or raised beds?

Yes! We can install drainage systems that protect edibles from root rot and help your food garden thrive.

5. How do I know if it’s a soil issue or a drainage one?

We assess both. Compacted or poorly draining soil often goes hand in hand with poor water flow. We’ll help you improve both the soil structure and the water movement.

  • Fully insured, professional team

Irrigation Planning

Water is life for your garden—but wasting it isn’t an option. At Fox Mowing, we design smart, tailored irrigation systems that deliver water exactly where it’s needed—efficiently, reliably, and sustainably.

With Australia’s water restrictions, unpredictable rainfall, and climate extremes, a well-designed irrigation system isn’t just a luxury—it’s a garden essential. Whether you need to support a lush lawn, flower beds, veggie patches, or native landscapes, we’ll help you design an irrigation setup that saves water and keeps your plants thriving.

Why Irrigation Design Matters

A poorly planned irrigation system can:

  • Waste thousands of litres of water
  • Lead to uneven watering, root rot, or dry patches
  • Damage plants with overwatering or underwatering
  • Increase your water bills and maintenance time

A professionally designed system from Fox Mowing ensures your garden receives just the right amount of water, at the right time, in the right way.

Our Irrigation System Design Process

1. Site & Plant Assessment

We start with a detailed on-site evaluation, including:

  • Soil type and drainage
  • Sun and shade patterns
  • Plant types and groupings (lawns, beds, shrubs, edibles, natives)
  • Slope and runoff conditions
  • Water source (tank, mains, bore, greywater)
  • Local council restrictions and regulations

This allows us to design a system that’s customised for your garden’s specific needs.

2. Choosing the Right System

We recommend irrigation types based on your space, goals, and efficiency:

Irrigation Type Best For
Drip IrrigationGarden beds, shrubs, veggie patches – targeted, low-waste watering
Pop-Up SprinklersLawns and open areas – covers large zones efficiently
Micro Sprays/MistersDelicate plants, flowers, shaded zones
Soaker HosesInformal beds, hedges, or temporary watering setups
Smart ControllersFull gardens with variable watering needs and automation

We often combine systems in one garden to maximise effectiveness and minimise waste.

3. Efficient Zoning & Layout

Grouping plants with similar water needs helps prevent over- or under-watering. We’ll create zones in your garden, such as:

  • Lawns (require frequent watering)
  • Native or drought-tolerant beds (require minimal watering)
  • Edible gardens (require deep, regular soaking)

We also factor in coverage, pressure, and accessibility, ensuring even water distribution and ease of maintenance.

4. Water-Saving Technology

Modern irrigation design includes:

  • Smart controllers that adjust schedules based on weather
  • Rain sensors that pause watering during wet conditions
  • Timers for hands-free watering
  • Wi-Fi-connected systems for remote monitoring and control

We’ll show you how to make the most of automation, saving time and water.

Benefits of a Well-Designed Irrigation System

  • Saves water and reduces waste
  • Encourages deeper root growth and healthier plants
  • Reduces manual labour and guesswork
  • Prevents overwatering, root rot, and fungal issues
  • Complies with water restrictions and local guidelines
  • Increases garden resilience during dry spells

A custom system from Fox Mowing pays off year after year in plant health, water savings, and peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can I install an irrigation system on an existing garden?

2. Is irrigation worth it for small gardens or courtyards?

Absolutely. Even small gardens benefit from drip or soaker systems to save time and water.

3. Will the system work with my rainwater tank?

Yes. We can design systems compatible with tanks, bores, or greywater for eco-conscious watering.

4. Can I adjust watering if I go away?

With smart controllers, you can monitor and adjust your system from anywhere—perfect for holidays or busy weeks.

Hard Surfaces

Landscaping isn’t just about lawns and plants—it’s also about the hard surfaces that give your garden structure, function, and flow. At Fox Mowing, we design and install hardscape elements that elevate your outdoor space—making it more usable, accessible, and visually striking.

From stepping stones to retaining walls, hard surfaces are the backbone of great landscaping, especially in the harsh and varied Australian climate.

What Are Hard Surfaces in Landscaping?

Hard surfaces, also known as hardscaping, refer to the non-living elements in your garden design. These include:

  • Paths and walkways
  • Patios and entertaining areas
  • Edging and borders
  • Retaining walls
  • Garden steps and access ramps
  • Drainage channels and gravel beds
  • Fire pit or seating areas

They create definition, improve accessibility, and reduce maintenance while complementing your garden’s natural beauty.

Why Hardscaping Is Essential in Australian Gardens

Australia’s climate brings heat, drought, heavy rains, and erosion risks. Hard surfaces:

  • Protect soft landscaping from washout or trampling
  • Improve drainage and prevent muddy patches
  • Provide structure and flow to outdoor spaces
  • Support tiered or sloped gardens
  • Add value and curb appeal to your property
  • Reduce weeding and mowing zones

Whether your garden is coastal, urban, or country-style, hardscaping enhances both practicality and design.

At Fox Mowing, we offer practical, attractive hardscape solutions tailored to your outdoor goals and environment.

  • Correct levelling and compaction

2. What’s the best surface for high-traffic areas?
